Audi says it only plans to make 1000 units of its e-tron electric sports car and that it will almost certainly be priced at "above R8" levels when it goes on sale in 2012.

Four motors – two each at the front and rear axles – drive the wheels, making the concept car a true quattro. The latest Audi e-tron has been confirmed as Audi R4 preview. Awesome!

Destined to slot between the R8 and TT ranges, the R4/e-tron is expected to get a range of powertrains, not just electric power. The all-electric version will be the halo car of the model line, but the gasoline-powered version (or versions) will undoubtedly be the volume sellers.

We already know about the latest e-tron's electric powertrain: 313 horsepower, 0-60 mph times of 5.9 seconds, top speed of 124 mph and a range of about 155 miles.

Audi has announced that it will partner with utilities E.ON and Stadtwerke München (SWM) as well as the Technical University of Munich (TUM) launch a field test program with its A1 e-tron in Munich, Germany by mid-2011. The automaker will supply 20 of the extended-range electric vehicles to its partners for an evaluation of the communication systems between the driver, vehicle and grid. Smartphone applications that let drivers monitor and manage charging will be a big part of the test program.
